With this article I try to shed light on the matter by pointing out characteristics that may indicate trauma and telling about my personal experience.
When I was 21 years old, the thought crossed my mind whether I had suffered a trauma.
It started with subtle signs that I had ignored for a long time. Flashbacks of past events that suddenly overwhelmed me. A constant feeling of restlessness and tension that permeated my everyday life.
But the question "Do I have a trauma?" was not easy to answer. I had experienced a lot of suffering in my past, including my toxic relationship with a lot of violence, which I thought I had overcome at the time. The path to realization was not a straight one. There were moments of denial and resistance in which I tried to rationalize or trivialize my feelings. But over time I realized that ignoring my emotions and repressing my memories did not lead to a solution. They only increased my suffering and prevented me from healing.
The decision to seek help was an important step on my path. An experienced healer helped me to validate my feelings and process my past.
Signs of a traumata:
1.Flashbacks: If you suddenly and unexpectedly have intense memories of a traumatic event that feel like a reliving of the situation, you may be traumatized.
2. Avoidance behavior: Consciously or unconsciously avoiding places, people or activities that remind you of the trauma may be an indication that you are suffering from trauma.
3.Sleep problems: Problems falling asleep, sleeping through the night, or nightmares could indicate a traumatic event that is bothering you.
4.Physical symptoms without an identifiable cause Untreated trauma can also manifest itself physically, for example through headaches or stomach aches, without a medical cause being found.
